What happened on 29 July 2026?
PTI reported from Patna that the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board approved a proposal to build a temple dedicated to Narendra Modi. The Free Press Journal says the meeting was held at the Social Welfare Department in the Old Secretariat, Patna. It was the board's first meeting.
The proposal came from board member Rajan Singh. PTI says Singh made the proposal because Modi gave the community "respect and rights", and that it "received the support of all members". The Free Press Journal adds that Singh said the community in Bihar did not have a temple of its own. All of this is Singh's account. We did not find the written minutes of the meeting, so we cannot confirm the vote ourselves.
The Free Press Journal reported that Singh said the state government would identify the land in Patna and bear the construction cost. No figure was given that day.
Who sits on this board?
Drishti IAS, in a note dated 31 July 2026, says the board has 28 members and works under the state Social Welfare Department. It says the board was formed in August 2025 and this was its first meeting. Other outlets describe it as the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board, and some call it the Kinnar Welfare Board. These are the same body.
For more on the person who made the proposal, see our profile of Rajan Singh and the Bihar transgender board. For the full story of the first meeting, read how the board approved the Modi temple proposal.
What was said on 1 August 2026?
Navbharat Live published a report on 1 August at about 6 pm. It says land had not yet been identified. It says the board expects government support and also plans to raise money through donations from community members. It reports that Singh wants Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to be invited to the bhoomi pujan, the ground-breaking ceremony. The report adds that the Prime Minister's Office had given no official reaction.
Please note what this is. It is a plan described by Singh. It is not a government decision. We found no statement from the Chief Minister about the temple.
What did the board ask for on 11 August 2026?
ETV Bharat reported on 11 August that Singh said the board asked the government for five acres of land and Rs 112 crore. Singh also spoke of a life-size gold statue. Asked about the statue's cost, Singh said that if money fell short, "we'll arrange it". Singh said the proposal would next go to the Cabinet Secretariat.
These numbers come only from Singh. A request is not an approval. We found no document showing the government agreed to the land or the money. We explain why the reports about money differ in why reports disagree on the Modi temple cost.
Money: what each report says
| Source and date | What it says about money |
|---|---|
| Free Press Journal, 29 July | The state government will bear the cost. No amount. |
| Navbharat Live, 1 August | Government support plus community donations. |
| ETV Bharat, 11 August | The board asked the government for Rs 112 crore. |
| The Federal, 20 August | Singh says the temple would cost Rs 112 crore on five acres. |
What happened at the Press Club of India on 20 August 2026?
On Thursday 20 August, videos spread online from the Press Club of India in Delhi. They showed a life-size cutout of Modi and a banner reading "Bhagwan Shri Narendra Modi Chalisa". A chalisa is a prayer made of forty verses. According to The Week, the organisers performed an aarti, a prayer with a lamp, for the Prime Minister.
The Federal, citing PTI, reported that the Press Club said it did not organise the event. It said the hall had been booked for a press conference, that the booking terms were broken, and that club officials stepped in and stopped the event. The Week and The Federal both call Singh the vice president of the board. The Federal, citing PTI, quotes Singh saying: "If we want to construct a temple for him, what is wrong with it?"
It is important to be exact here. Reports say the hall was booked as a press conference. They do not show that this was an official board event. The club disowned it. For a full account, see what happened at the Modi Chalisa event.
What happened after 20 August?
The Wire reported on 22 August that the Press Club of India had issued show-cause notices over the event and was reviewing its rules for booking halls. A show-cause notice is a letter asking someone to explain their actions. The Wire page we could open showed only that headline, so we do not know who got the notices. Check The Wire for the full text.
On 21 August, Queerbeat reported that board member Anupriya Singh disputed Rajan Singh's claim that the whole board backed the temple. It also reported the 14 August complaint to the Prime Minister's Office. A complaint is only a request for a check. We found no report of any reply or inquiry. The profile page below has the details.
What do we not know yet?
As of 24 October 2026, we found no credible report on any of the following.
- Any piece of land chosen, offered or given.
- Any government order or sanction of money.
- A reaction from the Prime Minister's Office, the Bihar government, or any political party that we could verify.
- A trust, an architect, a design or a construction date.
- A date for a bhoomi pujan.
- Any court case about this temple.
Some online posts claim a "14 July resolution", a trust, a 36-month build or a 2029 opening. We found no credible source for any of these, so we do not list them. If you have seen a document, please send it to us through the contact page. See also when could the Modi mandir be built.
What came before? Other Modi temples
This is not the first time a Modi temple has been in the news. Press reports describe a small temple in Rajkot district in 2015 and a shrine in Pune in 2021. Reports differ on the details, and in both cases people objected, including Modi himself in the Rajkot report. This is only background and does not change the Patna dates. Our comparison of Modi temples across India has the full table. See our Patna proposal topic page and the site timeline for more.
