What is Modi Mandir?

Modi Mandir is a proposed temple in Patna, Bihar, dedicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On 29 July 2026 the Bihar State Transgender Welfare Board approved the idea at its first meeting, according to board member Rajan Singh. It is only a proposal for now. Nothing has been built.

Who proposed the Modi Mandir?

Board member Rajan Singh presented the proposal at the welfare board meeting in Patna. He is also spelled Ranjan Singh in some reports. The Week calls him the board's vice president, so his title is described differently in different places. The claim that every member backed the idea comes from him; we have not seen the meeting minutes.

Why did the board propose a temple for PM Modi?

Rajan Singh said the transgender community in Bihar has no temple of its own and wants to thank Mr Modi, who he said "gave us respect and rights". He linked this to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. Other people disagree with this view. For example, The Wire asked why a temple was a priority when the community still faces many problems.

Does the board's approval mean the temple will be built?

No. The board approved an idea. A temple still needs land, money and permissions. The reports we read describe the project as not yet sanctioned by the state government.

When will the Modi Mandir be built?

No date has been announced. None of the reports we read gives a start date or a finish date. Until land and money are settled, any date you see online is a guess.

How much will the Modi Mandir cost?

There is no official budget. A figure of Rs 112 crore is mentioned in news reports. The Week says the organisers plan a temple costing that much, and Drishti IAS also gives it as an estimate. We found no government document with this number, so treat it as a claim by the proposers.

Rajan Singh said the state government would pay for construction. We found no statement from the Bihar government agreeing to this, and no budget order. So who will pay is not confirmed.

Has Narendra Modi said anything about the temple?

Rajan Singh defended the event and asked what was wrong with building a temple for Mr Modi.

Is this website the official Modi Mandir site?

Is there any other temple for Narendra Modi?

In 2015 a group of supporters built a small temple with a statue of Mr Modi in Kothariya village near Rajkot, Gujarat. Mr Modi said he was appalled, and the temple was taken down on 12 February 2015. We know of no working temple for him today.

Why was the Rajkot Modi temple removed?

Reports differ. Al Jazeera says local officials pulled it down because it stood on government land. The Tribune says revenue officials called it illegal because no clearance was taken, and that Mr Modi's supporters took it down. Both say Mr Modi had spoken out against it.

Is the Modi Mandir in Modinagar, Ghaziabad the same as this one?

No. Modinagar in Uttar Pradesh was renamed in 1945 after the industrialist Gujarmal Modi, not after the Prime Minister. We found nothing that links any temple there to the Patna proposal. We have not checked visiting hours, so please check with the temple.

What does Article 27 of the Constitution say?

Article 27 says no person can be forced to pay a tax whose money is set aside to promote or maintain a particular religion. It is about taxes that are specially collected for that purpose. People disagree about how it applies to a temple paid for from general government funds.

Can the government legally pay for a temple?

There is no simple yes or no. Article 27 covers taxes set aside for a religion, and courts look at each case on its facts. No court has ruled on the Patna proposal, and no government money has been confirmed. If you want the details, read our topic page on law and money.

What is the Bommai case and why does it come up?

In S.R. Bommai v. Union of India (1994), a nine-judge bench of the Supreme Court said secularism is part of the Constitution's basic structure. The case was about dismissing state governments, not about temples. People mention it when they discuss whether the state should stay neutral between religions.
