Virtual Aarti: Try the Temple Rituals Online
There is no Modi Mandir to visit yet. With JavaScript on, this page lets you ring the bell, offer flowers, wave the aarti thali and break a coconut in your browser. Here is what each step means.
Ring the bell (घंटा)
Most Hindu temples hang a bell (ghanta) at the entrance. Visitors ring it as they arrive, to announce themselves and to clear the mind before darshan. Many people believe the sound wards off negative influences.
Offer flowers (पुष्प)
Flowers (pushpa) are among the simplest offerings in Hindu worship. Marigold, lotus and hibiscus are common in North India. An offering does not need to cost much; what matters is the feeling behind it.
Do the aarti (आरती)
Aarti is the waving of a lit lamp in clockwise circles before the deity, usually while a hymn is sung. In most temples it happens in the morning and the evening. Afterwards devotees pass their hands over the flame and touch their eyes, to receive its blessing.
Break a coconut (नारियल)
Breaking a coconut (nariyal or shriphal) is a common offering at the start of something new. The hard shell is often explained as the ego, broken to reveal the pure white inside. The pieces are shared as prasad.
